Lake Menindee Ephemeral River Meander L1080240
Ephemeral stream meanders on the dry bottom of Lake Menindee, NSW...Menindee Lake is the largest of four main ephemeral lakes fed by the Darling River. Through a system of dams, channels and levees that were constructed in the 1950s and 1960s the water in the lakes is used to manage water flows in the Murray Darling basin and supply water for mining and domestic use in Broken Hill. ..Irrigation water pulled from the Darling basin for cotton farming in NSW upstream of the lakes has placed considerable pressure on the lakes and the water supply in Broken Hill and downstream. Menindee Lake has largely been empty of water in the last years.
